I have always had a love for the Gothic. Not just the architecture but the literature and the way it transfers into modern day life. I just love it. Ever since I was around 12 and my dad let me watch Alien for the first time I decided I didn't mind gore or skeletons anymore (when before I couldn't even walk past a skeleton in York Dungeon). Now my life basically revolves around horror films and picking which one won't be too scary for me to watch. The Gothic is what I like about horror films. You can choose between Horror or Terror depending on how brave you're feeling. The Horror genre is probably my favourite; torture, gore, blood, guts, murders and murderers. Yet, Horror and Terror overlap more often than not. For example, Terror is all about the mind, the way the mind can be manipulated and the reaction the audience has because of this. Terror is something much harder to convey through physical artwork like paintings and drawings. However, this year I am focusing more on my love for film, and the way there doesn't have to be a script to scare the audience. I think the Gothic is a very good way to use Terror through film and Horror through painting. Hopefully I will achieve this this year.
