Sonny Williams is an artist who graduated from University of Sunderland in 2001. His work is surreal and creepy, consisting of portraits and desolate, lonely objects painted small on a large canvas. His portraits interest me because he changes the subject within the painting to something that can't be real, shortening their necks and enlarging their heads.

This particular image won the 2002 'Eye Opener Durham Open Art Competition'. The judges said of the piece "...this painting was chosen for its boldness, originality and striking image and that the power of this painting is so strong that if you took everything else off the walls it would carry the room on its own." Critically, Williams sits within the spectrum of contemporary portraiture like myself, searching for a seat within the fine art world.
